Job Description

In 1881, the first three Sisters of Bon Secours arrived in America from Paris. These Sisters were trained nurses and their purpose was to visit the sick and dying and care for them in their own homes. In 1919, the first Bon Secours Hospital was opened in Baltimore. The House on the Marriottsville campus opened in 1965 and the Retreat and Conference Center opened in 1968. Our charism of healing, compassion and liberation is part of all of our efforts. The Special Collections Archivist assists with selection, care & use of the historical records, documents and objects of the Sisters of Bon Secours USA according to Sisters of Bon Secours values & the Academy of Certified Archivists Role Delineations.


This position reports directly to a Sister of Bon Secours – who’s title is Archivist.  According to the Sisters of Bon Secours Constitution, all Archive activities must ultimately be approved by a Sister of Bon Secours. The actual day-to-day management of the archives is the responsibility of the Special Collections Archivist.



  • Receive, arrange & describe collections;
  • Create, manage & maintain records & inventories as paper & digital files;
  • Preserve artifacts & historical documents including visual & audio media;
  • Maintain housekeeping best practices for Archives;
  • Facilitate research requests from various sources;
  • Coordinate with BSHSI staff on projects requiring resources from the Sisters’ Archives;
  • Provide access to the collections;
  • Manage outreach activities including publication submissions, static & rotating exhibits, all to accepted archival standards;
  • Manage other short-term projects requested by the Archivist or Area Leader;
  • Deliver presentations & program updates as requested;
  • Loan pieces only on direct approval of the Archivist, Area Leader, or her designee;
  • Prepare annual program activity report;
  • Prepare annual budget & work within fiscal responsibilities of same;
  • Recommend program improvements;
  • Coordinate activities of the Archives in absence of the Archivist (communications, newsletters, local group activities, etc.)






Job Requirements


Required Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Library Science, History or related field & minimum of three (3) years of archival work;
  • Demonstrated research skills using primary source materials, values historical records;
  • Compliance with the confidentiality of the Sisters’ Archives materials;
  • Personal characteristics sufficient to support autonomous, detail oriented work in small office setting;
  • Proven communication/relationship skills effective at both staff and executive levels;
  • Ability to grasp & articulate an understanding of Bon Secours Charism, Mission & Philosophy & maintain the quiet atmosphere of the work area/facility.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) & other programs including Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Epson photo scanner software;
  • Must be creative and resourceful.


Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Library Science/related field;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Archivist Took Kit and Archives Space;
  • Academy of Certified Archivist accredited;
  • Previous knowledge of the Sisters of Bon Secours or Bon Secours Health System, Inc.;
  • Roman Catholic or background in the Roman Catholic faith



This is a thirty-two hour a week, non-exempt position. Eligible employees may earn overtime compensation when weekday evening and/or weekend work is required. Business travel for this position is not anticipated. There is no relocation assistance offered with this position.
