Job Description

St. Michael Poplar Springs Catholic Church, located in Mount Airy, Maryland, has an opening for a Preschool Director.  The Preschool Director will be in charge of the grand opening of the new St. Michael Preschool in September 2018.  The Director will be essential in the mission of our church to 'go and make disciples' through the educational formation of our community's three and four year olds and their families.  The Director is a practicing Roman Catholic.  It is the Director's job to oversee the quality of the educational and spiritual components of the parish preschool program.  As enrollment grows the Director may serve in the dual role of Director and Teacher.  Evening work may be required, particularly to attend meetings of the Pastoral Council, Education Committee, Finance and other ad hoc meetings.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of preschool decision making including policies, curriculum, recruitment and enrollment in collaboration with Pastor, Corporators and Education and Finance Committees
  • Set short and long term goals for establishment and improvement of the new preschool program
  • Participate in the continued planning and implementation of the new preschool
  • Oversee preschool operation on a daily basis
  • Plan yearly calendar including holidays, programs, and staff development days
  • Communicate and support the staff in carrying out the standards of the school
  • Stay current in early childhood education and administration through classes, workshops, and professional organizations
  • Develop and maintain health and safety standards as set by state and diocesan guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with church and diocesan Safe Environment requirements
  • Prepare forms and conduct registration, collect applications, fees and tuition
  • Maintain student records to meet state and diocesan guidelines

Management Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, interview, and hire staff
  • Teach classes until enrollment revenues support employment of full time teaching staff
  • Provide leadership and supervision to preschool staff
  • Develop and maintain staff handbook and employment agreements
  • Conduct periodic evaluations for staff; provide feedback, coaching and disciplinary action
  • Conduct staff meetings
  • Supervise the development of in-service training programs for the staff
  • Recruit volunteers as appropriate

Development and Public Relations:

  • Plan advertising and recruitment for the preschool enrollment
  • Plan promotional communications of school events and news on social media
  • Plan and conduct parent orientation
  • Develop and maintain parent/student handbook
  • Send out school calendar.  Publish monthly school newsletter
  • Conduct school tours
  • Communicate and be a liaison to Parish Pastor, Preschool Staff, Parents and Community
  • Work with the church staff to coordinate facilities requirements, schedules and maintenance to support preschool activities
  • Communicate with MSDE advisor on MSDE visits for licensing

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Manage all financial operations of the preschool
  • Set annual budget with Business Manager and Finance Committee
  • Review monthly profit and loss results at Preschool Finance review meetings
  • Purchase supplies and equipment
  • Approve timesheets, payroll and accounts payable
  • Manage enrollment and staffing plans to meet income and expense goals for annual budgets

Curriculum and Spiritual Formation:

  • Develop an age-appropriate, state approved curriculum that balances structured and unstructured activities and meets diocesan guidelines
  • Incorporate a curriculum with teacher facilitation, exploratory, problem solving, and child-initiated activities
  • Provide a curriculum where academic skills are taught using hands-on, interactive learning with minimal paper-pencil tasks
  • Provide leadership and input for developing new strategies for Catholic Christian growth and evangelization
  • Encourage, inspire and nurture preschool children to experience God's love and the wonder of creation as a beginning of their Catholic faith journey
  • Schedule and maintain age-appropriate chapel times and worship activities
  • Integrate Catholic Christian concepts and principles, with an emphasis on Catholic symbols and rituals, into the daily academic curriculum




Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (early childhood education, elementary education, or child development preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of Catholic tradition, symbols and liturgical rituals
  • 90 early childhood credit hours as described by MSDE Comar regulations - 6 semester, 90 clock hours or the equivalent of approved early childhood coursework
  • 45 hours child development and 45 hours curriculum planning
  • Or, Hold the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential issued by the Council for Professional Recognition
  • Or, Hold a teaching certificate from the MSDE or another state for 3 year olds
  • 45 clock hours of MSDE Administrative Training
  • 3 clock hours of ADA compliance
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in an accredited early childhood teaching setting
  • High personal integrity
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, teachers and children
  • A child-centered approach to preschool administration
  • Experience with preschool formation and new program implementation
