Job Description

The Archdiocese of Baltimore seeks qualified candidates for the position of Pastoral Planning Facilitator.  The Pastoral Planning Facilitator will support the work of the Office of Pastoral Planning to implement a strategic model of parish pastorates that will solidify the future vibrancy of the Catholic Church's presence in the Archdiocese of Baltimore through pastoral planning.  The Pastoral Planning Facilitator will be responsible for working closely with pastorate pastors and their leadership, as well as the Archbishop and Vicar Bishops, to assist them in carrying out the local implementation of the Archdiocesan model at the pastorate level.  You will work with assigned parishes and/or within a specified geographic area (vicariate), but will also be expected to support Archdiocesan-wide efforts, as needed.

Mission:

The successful candidate for this position is a practicing Roman Catholic committed to the mission of the Church through the support of the ministry of the Archbishop of Baltimore.  This person must understand the importance of her/his role in working with the faithful of the Church in a variety of ways.  The ideal candidate must have a strong desire to evangelize and spread the Gospel and to build up the Body of Christ for this purpose.

Essential Functions:

The primary role of this position is to facilitate the work of a team of pastor, staff, and lay parishioners who are appointed to plan the local implementation of the Archdiocesan model.  The facilitator will guide these Pastorate Planning Teams by enacting a process to assist the team in effectively developing a pastorate plan consistent with the Archdiocesan model.  The incumbent will apply facilitation techniques that enable and empower planning team members to discern and articulate a vision for the pastorate and set goals for achieving this vision through a strategic plan that is mission-focused, evangelization-based, and data-informed.  To do this, the Pastoral Planning Facilitator will:

  • Ensure that the mission of the Church is paramount in all pastorate planning team activities and deliberations
  • Work with pastorates to identify key trends and considerations impacting the strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats for evangelization in their territory.
  • Remain informed about and share accordingly demographic, development, technological, economic, and political trends that influence the mission of evangelization
  • Work with the pastorate planning team to develop a pastorate strategic plan that is mission-focused, evangelization-based, and data-informed
  • Work in close collaboration with the various offices within the Catholic Center that serve as a resource to the planning effort, ensuring appropriate coordination with the corresponding Vicariate office
  • Maintain good communications and collaboration with those offices and/or designated staff who are the most integrally involved in the planning process, including the Department of Evangelization, Department of Human Resources, Office of Fiscal Services, and Office of Facilities and Real Estate Management.  Establish and build relationships with pastors, staff, and lay leadership in designated pastorates
  • Facilitate the formation of pastors, staff, and parishioners around the pastoral planning process
  • Lead the pastorate planning team through activities to support participation and effective decision-making
  • Actively listen to discussions and judiciously guide all team members to participate and act as a group when making decisions
  • Provide ongoing leadership formation for pastoral councils and other leadership groups as necessary to support the implementation of the pastorate plan
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

To be considered best qualified, candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • College Degree [Master's Degree preferred] in church ministry, theology, social sciences, business administration, or community planning
  • Five or more years work experience related to the establishment of complex strategic or tactical plans in a religious or human services environment, or comparable setting
  • Demonstrated and thorough knowledge of group process, team formation process, conflict resolution methods, decision-making methods, and group process tools typical of an established facilitator
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Church and a strong desire to evangelize and spread the Gospel.  Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience in leadership development and/or organizational management is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, confidentially, and discretely
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of a team and work in a collaborative and mutually supportive environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with survey tools and GIS mapping tools
  • Familiarity with Archdiocesan administrative structures and the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail

Work Environment:

The position will require significant time spent working in the field with the parishes in the assigned vicariate, and likely will involve one or more evening meetings per week. For this reason, the Pastoral Planning Facilitator must be able to work independently and remotely while maintaining close coordination and communication with coworkers in the Office of Pastoral Planning and Central Services.  At the same time, the staff of Pastoral Planners should understand that they are part of a team and that a collaborative and mutually supportive work environment is necessary to learn from each other so that the team can be most effective at supporting the work of the pastorates.
