Job Description

Basilica of the Assumption, located in downtown Baltimore, has an opening for a full-time Maintenance Technician.  The maintenance technician will maintain responsibility for all aspects of maintenance to insure a clean, safe and efficient physical plant.  Insure that buildings, assigned systems and building functions, and grounds are maintained appropriately through a program of planned maintenance.  Coordinate and assist with major projects for remodeling, maintaining, and improving physical plant and grounds.  Incumbent oversees various systems and building functions, including but not limited to: heating and air conditioning (HVAC), elevators and fire alarm testing and maintenance, window cleaning, pest control, trash disposal and janitorial services.  Incumbent will work at the primary location (Basilica of the Assumption) and secondary locations (Charles Street Rectory, Sexton's Lodge and Pope St. John Paul II Garden), but will need to maintain a flexibility to perform work at the Catholic Center after approval by the Basilica Operations Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise and direct the work of the contracted janitorial staff on a daily basis.
  • Receive routine and emergency maintenance work orders and insure timely completion.
  • Administer Preventive Maintenance program for the identified buildings and assigned systems.
  • Schedule, coordinate, monitor and insure completion of the work of approved Contractors.
  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance including, but not limited to: painting, carpentry, furniture and equipment repair and assembly; repair/replacement of locks, windows, fixtures and any other items as requested by the Operations Manager or as scheduled by the Maintenance System.
  • Perform electrical repairs and maintenance including, but not limited to: test and replace electrical outlets; reset breakers; replace fuses; replace interior and exterior light fixtures, bulbs, tubes, ballasts; repair electric cords and plugs.
  • Perform plumbing repairs and maintenance including, but not limited to: replace plumbing fixtures, faucet washers, flush valves, and garden hoses; unclog drains, toilets and spouts; etc.
  • Perform general grounds work including, but not limited to: remove trash; mow lawn; trim shrubs; water lawn and shrubs; clear sidewalks; remove snow and ice; unload, store, and distribute supplies.
  • Order, inventory and maintain secure control of maintenance supplies.  Purchase supplies as needed, according to established budget considerations.
  • Maintain a file system for all blue prints, equipment warranties and service manuals.
  • Insure immediate follow-through with corrective action for any possible safety/hazardous materials concerns including, but not limited to: safe storage of paint and cleaning solutions; immediate repair or replacement of frayed electrical wires; resolution of plumbing or building leaks, etc.
  • Insure that all buildings are secured in evenings and on weekends to prevent security breaches.
  • Operate a variety of gasoline powered equipment.
  • Schedule and document preventive maintenance of the on-site LNG powered generator.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' relevant experience in maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience, in the fields of carpentry, electrical work (including low voltage lighting), cement work, plumbing, sanitation, mechanics, HVAC systems, grounds maintenance, and janitorial care required.  Formal vocational and/or apprenticeship studies in at least two of these areas preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings required.
  • Ability to maintain budgets, and ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite of Products, including WORD and EXCEL, for job-related use, required.
  • Must be able to use a multimeter and other hand tools to keep building systems operating and maintained.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required to relate effectively with contractors and staff at all levels within the Basilica and Archbishop's residence, and to keep manager informed of unexpected challenges as they arise.  Proven ability to coordinate complex projects for repairing, remodeling and improving physical plant and grounds also required.
  • Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor in working with Basilica Rector, residents of the Charles Street Rectory, Basilica and Archdiocesan staff and Basilica visitors.
  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, and manage work assignments that directly influence staff productivity.  Assignments may be extremely broad in scope and incumbent will need to determine and complete specific duties.
  • Incumbent must be able to move furniture, equipment and other materials weighing up to and in excess of 50 pounds; to move about within very tight spaces where large and potentially dangerous equipment is stored; to operate various types of manual and power tools and automated systems; and to ascend/descend a variety of ladder lengths as needed for a given task.
  • This position will require work schedule flexibility and on-call availability in order to respond to emergency needs when they arise.
