Job Description

St. John the Evangelist Church, located in Severna Park, Maryland is seeking candidates for a Director of Youth Ministry.  The Director of Youth Ministry will be responsible for developing teams of ministers to young people of the parish in middle and high school, as well as engaging the young adult population. The position will include the development of a program of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation as well as a strategy for evangelizing young people and forming them as disciples of Jesus Christ.

St. John the Evangelist Church is dedicated to making disciples of Jesus Christ through active evangelization.  Weekend Mass attendance averages over 2000, with a parish school of almost 500 students in Grades PK-8. Among other resources, St. John's uses Alpha as a major tool for introducing people to Jesus Christ. The parish youth ministry program is rebuilding with a middle school component (Ignite) attracting around 150 students, a high school Confirmation preparation program of approximately 80 teens, and a small high school youth ministry (Rise) that is hoped to see development and expansion in reaching teens. Each has established a team of volunteers who enthusiastically are looking to capitalize on the success of the middle school program.

Job Responsibilities:

Middle School (Ignite) & High School (Rise) Ministry

  • Develops and supports a youth ministry program for youth in Grades 6-12 that evangelizes and forms young people as disciples of Jesus Christ through catechesis, prayer, service, and community building
  • Recruits, trains, and supports a team of adult and older teens to give talks, lead small groups and engage in relational ministry to middle and high school youth
  • Arranges for opportunities for youth to engage in acts of service, particularly focused on the works of mercy, including some sort of theological reflection connected with the service experience
  • Maintains a presence to the middle schoolers and faculty of St. John the Evangelist School, with regular visits and developing opportunities for them to engage in parish-sponsored youth ministry opportunities
  • Supports parents as the primary educators of their children in the faith through parent gatherings, particularly extending the opportunity for involvement in youth ministry programs as team members
  • Ensures that opportunities abound for teens to grow in faith, prayer, service, and community. Offers regular opportunities for high school youth to participate in parish-based retreats as well as be part of regional or national youth conferences
  • Collaborates in the development of offering Youth Alpha, ideally for middle school and high school youth participants prior to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation

Sacramental Preparation:

  • Develops and supports a program of preparation for young people to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation (typically in high school), moving towards a readiness model for reception of the sacrament
  • Recruits, trains, and supports a team of confirmed adults and youth leaders to give talks, lead small groups, and prepare confirmation candidates for reception of the sacrament
  • Arranges for the inclusion of a service and retreat component within the preparation program for the Sacrament of Confirmation
  • Arranges for those middle or high school age who have not already done so to prepare for and to receive the Sacraments of Initiation

Youth Adult Ministry:

  • Serves as liaison to the young adult community in Anne Arundel County, with an eye towards inclusion in the ministries of St. John the Evangelist parish.
  • Insures that young adults are welcomed and invited to be engaged in the life of the Church, particularly (although not exclusively) through ministries to young people

Other Responsibilities:

  • Attends gatherings of staff as requested
  • Maintains communication with the archdiocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry
  • Provides a visible, accessible presence at parish events
  • Communicates to and collaborates with other youth ministries related to the parish, including scouting programs, high school sacristans, music ministries, etc.
  • Demonstrates a concern for parishioner input
  • Provides a regular update on the status of youth ministry to parish leadership
  • Participates in annual reviews with the pastor's delegate
  • Prepares an annual budget for youth ministry for submission to the Parish Finance Council

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  • Has flexibility with one's work schedule, and available to work evenings and weekends
  • Successfully passes a criminal background check as well as completes VIRTUS training for the protection of children and vulnerable adults
  • Supports the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and is committed to the mission of St. John the Evangelist parish "to form disciples of Jesus Christ who joyfully live out the Gospel," with a primary emphasis on evangelization
  • Lives a life in conformity with Catholic teaching and embraces the role of serving as a public minister of the Church and representative of the parish

Job Requirements

  • Confirmed, practicing Roman Catholic eligible to participate in the sacramental life of the Church
  • Passion for the evangelization of young people to experience the love of Jesus Christ and realize a connection to the Church
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Theology, Religious Education, or related field
  • Proven leadership ability and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Publisher, etc.) as well as proficiency in the use of social media
  • Exemplary communication skills, particularly in relating to youth and their families, as well as public speaking ability
  • Basic working knowledge of audio-visual system functions
  • Minimum three years' experience in youth ministry or related field (such as FOCUS, NET, Hard as Nails, or similar youth evangelization ministries) preferred
  • Desire and capability of developing and supporting teams, and leading out of teams
  • Desire for reaching out to the disengaged and non-evangelized as well as the general parish population
