Job Description

Sacred Heart Parish, located in Glyndon, Maryland, is seeking candidates for a Director of Youth Ministry.  The Director of Youth Ministry (DYM) is responsible for the development, coordination, supervision and execution of parish programs designed to engage and educate the youth of the parish.  The Director of Youth Ministry will act as an advocate and link for youth and their families to the pastoral team, the parish family, and the surrounding community.

Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.  As such, the Director of Youth Ministry should be a faithful and practicing Catholic.  He/she should demonstrate a love for the particular needs of young people and be an example to them of an individual who lives a morally good life.  The DYM is expected to collaborate closely with the pastor and pastoral team to foster and develop youth formation programs.

Primary Objectives:

  • Empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today
  • Work to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person
  • Seek to draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the faith community.

Job Responsibilities:

Leader:

  • Promotes the formation of youth, young adults and adult leaders
  • Leads the core team(s) and catechists in planning and coordinating programs and services
  • Develops job descriptions and recruitment processes
  • Facilitates the training and support of leaders
  • Recruits teen and adult leaders as role models, faith leaders, volunteers and core members

Faith Formation:

  • Develops and implements evangelization and outreach programs (i.e. Confirmation and High School Religious Education programs)
  • Promotes active youth worship including inclusive and participative liturgy and prayer opportunities (especially at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Youth Masses)
  • Creates and oversees retreat opportunities and Archdiocesan youth programs (i.e. Fall Beach Retreat, Winter Lock-In, Baltimore-Appalachia Work Camps, Steubenville Youth Conferences)
  • Makes certain all events and programs reflect sound Catholic teaching
  • Provides for and participates in ongoing education opportunities

Advocate:

  • Represents the needs of youth to the pastor; the pastoral team and the community
  • Facilitates the development of community among young people, their families, their parish and the local community
  • Supports families in their role of promoting healthy adolescent development and faith growth
  • Partners with local schools and the civic community to promote effective services for youth and positive values in youth
  • Acts as a liaison with Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education and Youth Ministry
  • Is informed of and adheres to Church policies, local, state and federal laws pertaining to the abuse of minors

Administrator:

  • Facilitates the planning, implementation and evaluation of department goals
  • Establishes a collaborative relationship with other members of the pastoral team
  • Develops and monitors a budget in collaboration with the pastor and business manager
  • Assures that all legal, moral and Archdiocesan responsibilities are provided for within the context of the youth program
  • Effectively provides communication to teens, the parish, and community regarding activities and events
  • Develops and maintains records and database(s) of information pertinent to the department such as membership lists, resource materials, event information, etc.

General:

  • Attends and actively participates at parish staff meetings and events, Archdiocesan gatherings, and related activities
  • Keeps open lines of communication with other members of the parish staff regarding any items of concern or interest (especially with the Volunteer Screening Coordinator)
  • Develops working relationships with School and Religious Education departments and their staff so as to provide youth with opportunities to be introduced to youth programs
  • Makes certain that parish property is respected and appropriately used
  • Participates in the life and activities of the parish and develops opportunities for youth to be visibly present and involved with the larger parish community
  • Adheres to the policies and guidelines of the parish employee handbook

 

 

 

Job Requirements

  • BA in Theology, Religious Education or a related educational field and/or a certificate in ministry or theology from a Catholic institution of higher learning.
  • Demonstrate capability to carry out administrative and supervisory duties in a timely fashion, utilizing good communication and relationship skills
  • Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current with trends in Youth Ministry
  • This position entails frequent evening and weekend work
