Job Description

St. Paul Catholic Church, located in Ellicott City, Maryland, is seeking candidates for a Director of Religious Education.  The director of religious education administers the parish's catechetical programs for children through the eighth grade.  In order to do so effectively, she/he helps lead the parish's efforts in faith formation, so as to build a solid foundation for catechetical ministry.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepares, schedules, organizes and oversees the parish's religious education program for children in PreSchool-4 through 8th grade
  • In conjunction with the pastor, prepares, schedules, organizes and oversees the parish's sacramental preparation programs for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
  • Recruits, trains, and provides support and supervision for catechists in both the religious education and sacramental preparation program compliant with the archdiocesan curriculum goals
  • Ensures that all volunteers active in the program meet the VIRTUS guidelines set by the archdiocesan office of child protection
  • Prepares, schedules, organizes and oversees prayer services and liturgical celebrations for parents, children and/or catechists
  • Organizes and oversees the implementation of the Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) and of the Great Gospel, and coordinates their volunteer schedules
  • Prepares, organizes and oversees the parish's annual Vacation Bible School
  • Provides a monthly report on the program to the pastoral council of the parish
  • Serves as a resource person to the parish and its staff with respect to issues and/or programs related to children
  • Prepares an annual plan and a calendar for the academic year, and presents them to the pastor and mission and ministry manager for review and approval in February of the prior year
  • Prepares an annual budget for the fiscal year, and presents it to the pastor and finance and facilities manager for review and approval in March of the prior year
  • Reviews monthly income and expense reports with the finance and facilities manager, to ensure that the program operates within budget
  • Provides continuing education opportunities for catechists and parents, and encourages their participation in appropriate outside formation programs
  • Orders textbooks, teaching materials and resources for religious education and sacramental preparation
  • Annually reviews and updates the handbooks for the program and its catechists
  • Attends the regular meetings of the parish staff
  • Works collaboratively with the pastor, staff and parish leadership
  • Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current on trends in catechetical ministry and youth culture
  • Recruit and train volunteers
  • Keep records of sacraments received and present them to the staff member responsible for maintaining sacramental records
  • Maintain religious education records in ParishSoft, the archdiocesan database



Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in theology or religious education, or in a related field; a Masters degree would be desirable
  • Have two years' classroom or teaching experience
  • Demonstrate the ability to carry out his/her duties in a timely fashion, utilizing good communication and relationship skills
  • Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook 365 and ParishSoft)
  • Possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, such as to be proficient in composing reports and correspondence
  • Have a good knowledge of current youth cultures, and of trends and issues with those cultures
  • Be a practicing Catholic who loves Christ and His Church, is faithful to its teachings, and is able to communicate them effectively
  • Must be certified by the child protection office of the archdiocese under the VIRTUS program, and keep his/her certification current
