Job Description

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Parish, located in Woodstock, Maryland, is seeking candidates for a Director of Music.  The goal of the parish's Music Ministry is to enable full and active participation of the community in liturgy through music which encourages congregational singing.  The Director of Music will coordinate vocal ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists, accompanists, and others in music ministry.  The Director of Music is a sacramentally practicing Catholic who is knowledgable in Catholic liturgical practices and performs all duties consistent with Church documents on sacred music.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan all scheduled liturgies; play or provide coverage for all the liturgies.  Must rehearse musicians/cantors and ensure there is adequate coverage for all liturgies.  Schedule all music ensembles, cantors and accompanists
  • Plan all scheduled para-liturgies; play or provide coverage for all the para-liturgies.  Must rehearse musicians/cantors and ensure there is adequate coverage for all para-liturgies.  Schedule all music ensembles, cantors and accompanists
  • Support creating an atmosphere of welcoming within the liturgy
  • Be able to produce and work within an annual budget
  • Maintain all church-owned instruments and equipment used within the music ministry
  • Coordinate musicians/vocalists for weddings and funerals; be available to meet with families as needed for planning services, ensure that liturgical norms are maintained
  • Maintain the music library and ensure compliance with copyright laws
  • Attend staff and committee meetings as necessary

 

 

 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

  • Must know Roman Catholic liturgy; must be an experienced worship leader
  • Must be an excellent musician with skill ability on keyboard, organ and guitar
  • Must be able to lead ensembles in the following expressions: traditional choir, contemporary praise and worship music, music for youth
  • Must be able to lead and inspire congregational singing
  • Must have a minimum of two years experience in liturgical music
  • A degree in music is preferred
  • A practicing Catholic is preferred
  • Must pass all Archdiocesan requirements for the Protection of Children and Youth and maintain a safe and secure environment to ensure the well-being of the most vulnerable members of the parish
