Job Description

St. Francis of Assisi Parish, located in Fulton, MD (Howard County), is seeking candidates for a full-time Director of Liturgy and Music.  Under the leadership of the Pastor and in collaboration with the other Clergy, The Director of Liturgy and Music facilitates and is responsible for the liturgical setting music, planning and execution of all liturgical celebrations and related events in accordance with Catholic liturgical rites and documents.  The director provides the musical leadership that will lead the parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Parish "to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy" (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14)

Job Responsibilities and Duties:


Liturgy

  • In collaboration with the Clergy, plan and coordinate liturgical programs for all weekend and holy day Masses, sacramental celebrations, funerals, weddings and related events
  • Collaborate with Directors of Faith Formation to prepare for first Eucharist, confirmation, RCIA rites, parish celebrations, and related events
  • Recruit, train, develop, schedule, and manage all liturgical ministers to include altar servers, sacristans, ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, children's liturgy, and media ministers
  • Ensure all volunteers are in compliance with the Archdiocesan management system for the protection of children and youth
  • Prepare all scripts and worship aids including power point slides
  • Serve all Mass coordinator for all weekend liturgies or ensure a trained coordinator is present
  • Coordinate and plan for Masses of Christian Burial.  Serve as liaison between parish, funeral home, and family
  • Propose and manage expenses to liturgy annual budget
  • Commit to ongoing professional development
  • Form, collaborate with, and support a Liturgy committee

Music

  • In collaboration with the Clergy, define the core philosophy of music ministry and coordinate all aspects of music for weekend and holy day Masses, sacramental celebrations, funerals, weddings and related events
  • Serve at weekend and holy day Masses, sacramental celebrations, and related events.  Ensure a qualified substitute during absences
  • Recruit train, develop, schedule, and manage all music ministers to include cantors, accompanists, and choirs
  • Ensure all volunteers are in compliance with the Archdiocesan management system for the protection of children and youth
  • Direct weekly rehearsals with musical ensembles
  • Maintain and purchase musical and sound equipment
  • Supervise and manage administration for paid musical staff
  • Secure additional musicians as needed
  • Secure additional musicians as needed for celebrations such as Easter, Christmas, etc.
  • Maintain and manage music library
  • Propose and manage expenses to music annual budget
  • Commit to ongoing professional development

Parish Wide

  • Attend staff meetings
  • Coordinate with staff to create annual parish calendar.  Update and maintain parish calendar for all liturgy and music activities
  • Collaborate with pastoral staff to plan and participate in parish-wide events as well as ecumenical projects with community churches
  • Develop, update and manage all liturgy and music information on parish website
  • Provide all liturgy and music announcements to be included in weekly bulletin, flocknote and community advertising

 

Job Requirements

  • Practicing and devoted Catholic who is fully able to participate in the sacramental life of the Church
  • Bachelor's degree in music.  Master's degree preferred
  • Liturgical competency
  • Experience performing and directing music at the Catholic liturgy in a parish setting
  • Must be an accomplished keyboardist
  • Possess working knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical theology and the repertoire of sacred music
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, form and manage volunteers
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, collaborative, and pastoral style
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft suite programs, databases, music technology, and various software programs
  • Must be able to work evenings & weekends
