Job Description

St. Michael Poplar Springs - Mount Airy, MD is expanding the opportunities for our middle school and high school aged parishioners to grow closer to Christ, to participate more fully in the life of the Church and to put into action the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. St. Michael is seeking a part time (10-15 hours/week) youth minister to join the Faith Formation team and focus on growing the youth group experience for middle and high school youth and their families.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead an after-Mass monthly gathering of youth that has social and spiritual growth components, simultaneous (separate) meetings for middle school and high school groups
  • Identify, organize and lead service opportunities which strengthen the youth’s participation and understanding of the corporal works of mercy
  • Identify, organize and lead two weekend retreat opportunities for high school youth per year that strengthen the youth’s spiritual development; two day retreat opportunities per year for middle school youth
  • Identify, organize and lead two to four social opportunities per year that strengthen friendships and sense of parish community for each age group (middle school and high school)
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Faith Formation, coordinates high school and middle school youth groups to ensure continuity across all faith formation efforts, with parish goals and objectives, and with the parish calendar as a whole. Lead the high school and middle school youth groups; recruit and lead adult volunteers
  • Work closely with adult volunteers to age-appropriately ensure a sense a unity across both groups; facilitate sharing space and other resources; equivalent but age-adapted faith topics
  • Collaborate with parish staff to develop and implement a holistic youth group faith experience; and collaborate with parents and, as appropriate, families of youth participants in ways that strengthen family bonds and spiritual ties
  • Participate in weekly parish staff meetings as needed
  • Adhere to a given budget
  • Ensure that volunteers are compliant with AOB child protection policy in communication with St. Michael’s VIRTUS coordinator
  • Gather and retain permission forms as needed

Job Requirements

  • A fully initiated Catholic who demonstrates faithfulness to Church teaching in their own life
  • Demonstrates a social, collaborative, engaging and joyful spirit towards youth
  • BA in theology, religious studies, child and youth development, education or similar field
  • At least two years’ experience with youths of all ages and various developmental needs
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms that engage youth and their families
