Job Description

Are you a journalist who is tired of writing the same stories everyday about the latest crime stats and business developments? Do you want to tell the stories of people who are making a difference in and for their communities? Catholic Review Media seeks a staff writer who will develop ideas, report and write news and features for our publications and online platforms that support the mission of Catholic Review Media to “Inspire, teach inform and engage” the Catholic community in Maryland. 

SUMMARY

The Staff Writer provides dynamic content for all Catholic Review Media channels, including but not limited to The Catholic Review and CatholicReview.org. The staff writer will develop, report and write news and feature articles as well as in-depth centerspreads for the publications in a variety of formats.

 Tasks include:

  • Gathering and writing news and feature stories as assigned
  • Developing contacts and story ideas for beat areas, especially the archbishop and vicar bishops’ regions
  • Generating ideas and contribute to weekly editorial meeting.
  • Maintaining blog that expands upon the stories in the newspaper
  • Taking photographs and videos
  • Producing videos, audio reports and slideshows.
  • Proofreading copy
  • Assisting with Facebook and other social networking sites.

 

Job Requirements

Are you the best qualified? Multimedia, social media and visual (photo and video) skills will bring your résumé to the top of the heap. Applicants who can speak, read and write in English and Spanish are strongly preferred.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

The staff writer should have at least two years in writing and reporting, in addition to a degree in communications or journalism, or equivalent work experience. Working knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church is necessary. Experience with social media, or digital media, HTML or other Web content management is a plus.

Additional skills needed include:

  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Word
  • Be flexible and flourish on deadlines
  • Have a cursory knowledge of HTML, blogging and production formats
  • Understand video and sound editing software such as FinalCut, iMovie and Audacity are helpful.
  • Have access to personal transportation and valid driver’s license.
  • Work positively and effectively with others.
  • Respond to multiple demands respectfully.
  • Take direction and feedback constructively.
  • Communicate concerns regarding emergency or safety matters.
  • Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish preferred.
