Job Description

St. Ignatius of Loyola, located in Ijamsville, MD, is seeking candidates for a Pastoral Associate, Minister of Youth and Young Adult Programs.  The Pastoral Associate maintains ultimate responsibility for the development, coordination, supervision, and execution of parish programs designed to engage and educate the youth and young adults of the parish.  Acts as an advocate and link for youth, young adults and their families to the pastoral team, the parish family, the surrounding community, and the universal Church.

The nature of this position requires applicant to work a highly flexible schedule comprised of day, evening, and weekend hours.

Job Responsibilities:

Faith Formation:

  • Determines and implements appropriate curriculum for designated age groups and various grade levels utilizing curriculum options approved by the Archdiocese.  Insures proper balance among components, i.e. catechesis, retreats, prayer and worship, social issues and service, guidance and healing, and community building.
  • Discerns emerging youth ministry and catechetical needs; develops modifications and enhancements to meet needs as they develop.
  • Recruits, interviews, trains, and evaluates volunteer catechists and aides. Insures that their teaching adheres to the established curriculum and remains consistent with Catholic doctrine and moral and social teaching. Coaches and monitors volunteers in all aspects of classroom and curriculum management; in collaboration with the Pastor and appropriate Archdiocesan offices, terminates their services if necessary.
  • Provides opportunities for catechist formation and insures that catechists fulfill their obligation for theological and spiritual enrichment. Encourages catechists to pursue certification on a timely basis.
  • Teaches classes as needed.
  • Develops and directs the High School and Confirmation programs. Plans and conducts parent and sponsor meetings; plans annual Confirmation Retreat and recruits volunteers to support retreat activities; develops and communicates service options to students; follows through to insure that students fulfill their service obligation. Conducts rehearsal for Confirmation liturgy; coordinates and attends the liturgy.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a schedule of social opportunities for designated age groups of the parish to form community identity and establish effective peer relationships within the parish community. Explores opportunities for ecumenical interaction among youth in the local and surrounding communities.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a schedule of service/social justice activities for designated age groups to develop their sense of responsibility to and awareness of the needs of the parish community, the Diocesan church community, and the larger social community. Coordinates involvement in Archdiocesan activities such as Youth Day and Regional and National Youth Conferences.
  • Promotes active youth worship including participative liturgy and prayer opportunities. Required to collaboration with the ministry chairpersons to recruit and insures training for youth ushers, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, and music ministers, consistent with Archdiocesan guidelines, for liturgical and prayer services.

Leadership Development:

  • Actively recruits youth and adults to participate in the Youth Ministry program throughout the year. Encourages youth to pursue leadership opportunities in the program, and works extensively with youth leadership council to encourage them to select and coordinate appropriate social, service, and worship opportunities for their peers. Oversees related activities, including the publication of quarterly newsletters by the youth leadership council.


  • Represents the needs of parish youth to the Pastor, the Pastoral Team, and the parish community.
  • Facilities the formation of a strong identity with other Catholic youth, their families, their parish, and the local and larger Church communities.
  • Supports families in their role of promoting healthy adolescent and teen development and faith growth. Maintains a high degree of visibility and involvement with youth in the community and their families.


  • Maintains current and accurate attendance records for youth participating in Faith Formation and Confirmation Preparation. Contacts youth and parents or guardians as necessary if attendance becomes a concern.
  • Serves as an active member of the pastoral staff. Attends staff and other meetings as required. Collaborates with other members of the pastoral staff to determine direction of Religious Education and related activities to support the parish mission.
  • Coordinates and attends recurring and as-needed evening and/or weekend meetings with parents, youth leadership council, and participants in all programs within the scope of this position.
  • In collaboration with the Pastor, prepares and manages relevant portion of the Faith Formation budget. Assists youth leaders with oversight and coordination of fundraising activities.
  • Obtains parental support and consent for all activities as required
  • Compiles annual Archdiocesan Report for Religious Education/Youth Ministry.

Personal Formation:

  • Participates in the Association of Professional Youth Ministers and attends monthly meetings.
  • Participates in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current with trends in youth ministry.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Theology, Religious Education, or Youth Ministry preferred
  • Minimum of five years experience in teaching or managing a youth program of significant complexity, preferably in a faith-based environment. Experience working in a large parish is preferred.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic and demonstrate an active commitment to the Church's mission and to the sharing of that mission with youth. Must have the ability and experiences to design and implement a variety of youth-oriented social, service, and worship opportunities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of adolescent, pre-teen, and teen spiritual and personal development, youth cultures, and sociology. Exceptional listening and empathic skills required; ability to recognize and handle programs within scope of job duties and to refer programs outside of the scope of job duties to the appropriate party.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, including time management, delegation, planning, and budgeting.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with adults and children of all ages.
  • Outstanding computer skills, with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products and social media.
