Job Description

Mount de Sales High School located in Catonsville, Maryland seeks candidates for the position of Director of the Sacred Heart program.   The Director of the Sacred Heart Program oversees the academic supports and instruction designed to meet the specialized needs of college-bound students with identified learning disabilities and ADHD. The Director ensures that each student reaches her academic potential by providing oversight to Sacred Heart Seminar, taught individually or in small groups with students in the Program, and coordinating with teachers, parents, and program staff. The Director of the Sacred Heart Program assures that professional evaluations are maintained, and appropriate student support plans are drawn up and monitored. Acting as an advocate for the students, the Director coordinates regular communication between the school and the family as well as with teachers and school counseling staff.

  • Collect and interpret all professional evaluations and results of student testing
  • Create Student Support Plans in collaboration with students and their families, document and monitor accommodations received by each student, and provide consistent assessment of student progress
  • Maintain regular contact with parents regarding student progress and areas of concern
  • Assist teachers in implementing accommodations in the classroom and provide them with tools to respond to academic concerns
  • Supervise individual instruction of students or small groups to improve academic skills, assist with classwork, study skills, time management, organizational skills, and test-taking strategies
  • Select appropriate learning aids, materials, and supplies for instruction
  • Guide students in learning to advocate for themselves
  • Act as school counselor for students in the Sacred Heart Program
  • Work with Vice Principal of Academic Affairs in writing Academic Make-Up plans for students with Health-related illnesses
  • Work with Vice Principal of Student Affairs regarding discipline issues with Sacred Heart students
  • Work with families interested in enrolling their student in the Sacred Heart Program
  • Provide information and program details
  • Review and process documentation to determine a student’s eligibility for the program
  • Assist admissions committee in making decisions about potential new students
  • Provide faculty and staff with the necessary information to work with the Sacred Heart students
  • Distribute student plans including diagnostic information to each student’s teachers and update as appropriate
  • Share general information about learning disabilities with faculty in an effort to help them better understand the Sacred Heart population
  • Work with teachers who need additional resources about a specific student or have general concerns
  • Provide resources to faculty members with regard to special education issues, law, resources, processes
  • Facilitate the IEP process for parents of students who are currently in Sacred Heart or might be candidates for Sacred Heart
  • Work with the parents to understand the timelines and their role
  • Help teachers with necessary documentation
  • Clarify expectation of what can be expected from the process and what services the students might be eligible to receive
  • Attend IEP meetings, as available
  • Work with administration to develop policies which take into consideration the specialized needs of Sacred Heart students and within the context of the mission of Mount de Sales Academy
  • Collaborate with school counselors in providing support to students in the following areas:
  • Standardized testing
  • Admissions/placement testing
  • AP exams
  • College selection
  • Coordinate regular parent support group meetings
  • Act as “Services for Students with Disabilities Coordinator” for the College Board
  • Documentation of communication with parents, students and teachers in regard to the students’ academic plan, goals and progress
  • Coordinate all services through the Bookshare program
  • Supervise and evaluate Sacred Heart staff
  • Provide regular student updates to the Vice-Principal of Academics and Principal
  • Advise Vice-Principal of Academics and Principal on pertinent topics for faculty professional development

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in Special Education
  • Successful experience in working with students with learning disabilities
  • Knowledge of educational psychological evaluations and various forms of academic testing; ability to read and interpret testing information
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques and referral process
  • Capable content knowledge of college preparatory academic subjects
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic computer skills
  • Ability to integrate technology resources into student instruction when applicable
