Job Description

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, located in Woodstock, MD, is seeking candidates for a Director of Youth Formation.  The Director of Youth Formation (DYF) combines the responsibilities for religious education and ministry to youth.  The DYF administrates the parish catechetical program and provides leadership to assist the parish community in building a solid foundation of catechesis and youth ministry.  The DYF organizes, schedules and oversees all aspects of religious education for kindergarten through 12th grade; K-8 in the context of a formal Religious Education program, 9-12th grades in the context of a comprehensive Youth Ministry program.  This position also provides support and resources for parents in being able to raise their children in the faith.  This position entails frequent weekday, evening, and weekend hours.  Small parish staff calls for cooperation and collaboration between all staff members in supporting the office during regular business hours.

Job Responsibilities:

Ministry for Grades K-8

  • Coordinate with the appropriate staff member to prepare, schedule sacramental programs and services for students and parents for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation and enter into parish records
  • Order textbooks, teaching materials and resources for the programs
  • Consult on an annual budget with the Finance Committee
  • Prepare yearly calendar
  • Support and endorse diocesan and parish policies
  • Recruit volunteer catechists, liturgy coordinator and hall monitor and appropriate training as needed, including Child Protection Compliance
  • Provide support, supervision and formation or the catechists for religious education
  • Provide support and resources for parents in being able to raise their children in the faith
  • Planning, developing and implementing activities for middle school youth
  • Council, advise & visit with students, parents and teachers when classroom problems arise
  • Report periodically to the pastoral council
  • Other duties as deemed necessary, including coordination of the Summer Vacation Bible School

Ministry for Grades 9-12

  • Scheduling, publicizing and promoting youth activities through a variety of medium and personal contact
  • Planning, developing and implementing a comprehensive program for high school youth, including providing high school religious education and sacramental preparation as needed
  • Consult on an annual budget with the Finance Committee
  • Recruiting, training, and coordinating adult volunteers, including Child Protection Compliance
  • Membership on the Howard County Youth Ministers Team and coordination inter-parish activities
  • Coordinating participation in youth diocesan activities


Job Requirements

  • Must be a Catholic in good standing who models Gospel values and active participation in parish life
  • Must be willing to collaborate with Parish Life Director, pastoral staff, youth ministry volunteers, and others as appropriate to determine and carry out vision for youth formation
  • Demonstrate capability to carry out administrative and supervisory duties in a timely fashion, utilizing good communication and relationship skills, particularly in relating to youth and their families, and possessing outstanding organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills (proficient in Microsoft Office 365 programs) as well as proficiency in the use of social media within the parameters set by the Archdiocese
  • Basic working knowledge of audio-visual system functions preferred
  • Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current on trends and solid research in catechetical and youth ministry
  • Bachelor's degree in Catechesis, Religious Studies, Theology or a related field; Ministry experience in lieu of education will be considered
  • Prior experience in ministry to youth in a parish setting highly preferred
