Job Description

Basilica of the Assumption is seeking candidates for a Director of Music.  The Director of Music for the Basilica will assist the Rector in developing a prayerful, singing congregation through celebration, preparation, education, evaluation and personal ministry.  With the cooperation and assistance of all the parish ministers, the Director of Music Ministry will support the proclamation of the gospel message through song and challenge the community to live it more fully in accord with the guidelines of the Catholic Church.  The Director of Music is directly responsible to the Rector.  He/She is also responsible to the Parish Staff insofar as the Music Director is an active participant with them in carrying out Parish policy and goals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Generally responsible for planning and performance of all music associated with worship, religious education and evangelization in the Basilica
  • Participates in planning the liturgies with the Rector and bears primary responsibility for the music selections for all regular and special celebrations including all weekend liturgies, Easter Vigil, Holy Week liturgies, Holy Days of Obligation and Christmas liturgies without additional compensation
  • Recruits, schedules and trains members of the Choir and Cantors
  • Serves as primary point of contact for all music performances at the Basilica that the Rector has granted permission. Ensures each group or individual's affiliations are in keeping with Catholic Church doctrine and that all musical selections are appropriate for the sacred space of the Basilica.  Coordinates with the parish office for the calendaring aspects of this role.
  • Responsible for the managing and coordinating of music for all weddings; this includes communicating with the bridal parties, scheduling the organist/cantors/musicians, setting the music, etc.
  • Follows the work schedule as outlined below or as agreed by the Rector:
  • Sample Schedule - 40 hours (Full Time)
    • Monday - Normal Day Off
    • Tuesday - Office 9 am - 430 pm
    • Wednesday - Office 10 am - 4 pm; Choir Rehearsal 730 pm-930 pm
    • Thursday - Office 9 am - 430 pm
    • Friday - Normal Day Off
    • Saturday - Basilica 12 pm - 7 pm
    • Sunday - Basilica 7 am - 6 pm 
    • Please note this sample schedule is for illustrative purposes only.  Actual schedule may vary according to the needs of the Music Director and the Basilica. Included in office hours is time for planning and personal practice. 

Job Requirements

  • Be a Catholic who is in good standing with the Church. If married, in a valid Catholic marriage.  If single, living in accord with the Gospel and the teachings of the Church. Must be a disciple of Our Lord.
  • Be highly proficient as an organist and choir conductor
  • Be organized and efficient in planning. To be disorganized in this position is simply not permissible
  • Have the capability to develop an Authentic Cathedral Music program (choir(s), chant schola, vesper schola, sacred music concerts, cantors).
    • Part of this means finding musicians, choristers and cantors who are also practicing Catholics
  • Be able to lead chant
  • Be VIRTUS certified
  • Know and be faithful to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal as well as all liturgical norms/documents produced by the Church
