Job Description

The Coordinator of Youth Ministry will be responsible for both helping to develop and executing the vision and organization of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen's parish ministry to young people from Grade 6-12.  The Coordinator's primary goals are to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person, and to draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission and work of Jesus Christ, within the community of disciples at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. It should be noted that the Coordinators of Faith Formation operate at a flexible full-time status due to the numerous scheduled evening and weekend events throughout the catechetical year.

  • Provide leadership and direction for parish community in the formation, planning, implementation and ongoing support of its catechetical ministry for the youth-grade six through grade twelve
  • Foster, develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the Pastor, Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation, School Principal, Middle School Dean, Elementary Catechesis Coordinator, Music Director, Parish Business Manager, Parish and School Staff, Pastoral Council, Parish and School families
  • Facilitate all aspects of the Confirmation Program
  • Base his/her ministry on the principles and directives described in the (GCD) General Catechetical Directory and the published guidelines and policies of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and as such should be familiar with these documents
  • Foster and develop spiritual and educational growth of youth as supported financially by the parish
  • To be supervised and evaluated by the Pastor through the Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation

Duties & Responsibilities

Development of the High School Youth Program

  • Gain an understanding of all diocesan guidelines and procedures
  • Create and develop core group of youth and provide for its enrichment
  • Develop a network for reaching out to youth, particularly to the disengaged
  • Be available to youth at scheduled times for listening, advising, and referral
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement regular youth meetings and retreats
  • Develop positive relationships with parents as co-workers in the Christian formation of their children
  • Provide opportunities for youth to respond to the Gospel message in social outreach programs
  • Assist in the preparation of liturgical celebrations for the youth

Involvement in School of the Cathedral

  • Support leadership for the service and spirit program
  • Be involved in social justice curriculum for middle school
  • Foster relationship with youth of middle school by participation in the sixth grade retreat and seventh grade mission trip and eighth grade presentations

Organization of Confirmation Program

  • Plan, coordinate and implement program for Confirmation preparation
  • Work with Faith Formation Team to conduct parent preparation sessions
  • Provide appropriate materials for sacramental preparation
  • Plan the sacramental celebrations consulting with Pastor and Music Director
  • Conduct one retreat for children prior to the celebration of the sacrament
  • Evaluate and select new sacramental preparation materials periodically
  • Train and recruit catechists and team members for the sacramental program
  • Communicate with parents, catechists, sponsors and candidates on a regular basis

Administration and Budget

  • Recruit, train, support and evaluate staff of volunteer youth ministers
  • Implement systematic programming for religious education of youth in accordance with the Archdiocese of Baltimore for Confirmation program
  • Work with Faith Formation Team to foster catechetical certification of all youth ministers
  • Collaborate with staff on program budgets and budgetary process, and the ordering of materials relating to youth ministry
  • Evaluate all youth ministry programs annually

Relationships with Pastoral Staff and Parish Family

  • Attend staff meetings every other week as a full member directly accountable to the Pastor through the Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation
  • Serve as a liaison with the youth on behalf of the pastor and staff
  • Report to the Parish Council regularly on progress of youth
  • Seek regular input from parish and parents
  • Collaborate with Archdiocese of Baltimore Division of Youth and Young Adult Ministry
  • Participate in professional groups with other youth ministers to share and learn best practices
  • Other duties as assigned

 

 

Job Requirements

  • Roman Catholic in sacramental union with the Church
  • Bachelor's Degree in Religious Education or Theology preferred but not required
    • OR National Credential in Youth Ministry
    • OR background in theology and educational methodologies
    • OR Willingness to work toward the educational qualifications for the job
  • Knowledge of liturgy and how to plan liturgical events
  • Proficiency in the use of variety of office equipment
  • Good communications skills and experience with Constant Contact
